5 Tips for Choosing the Right Contractor

Construction Worker Fell On Job Site Augusta GA

Are you thinking about doing some renovations or perhaps you’re ready to build your first home in Augusta?  The possibilities can be amazing and the excitement through the roof.

Unfortunately, there are too many cases of contractor neglect that leave homeowners wanting to throw in the towel, not knowing what to do.  Having the right team to back you up during this time will help ensure that the process runs smoothly, and the results are everything you’d hoped for. Here are some tips for choosing the right crew.

  1. Get references from people you know

Surely you have friends that have used contractors in the past. They should be the first ones you ask for a reference.

  1. Interview at least three contractors

Some Augusta contractors talk a big game but don’t have anything to show for it.  Visit with more than one. Compare things like timeframes, cost, experience, and likeability. After all, you have to be able to work with the guy.

  1. Know who you’re working with

Doing a background check to know who you’re letting into your home is a great idea. Get your current contractor’s license. Make sure his business has their own insurance and learn what he’s responsible for and what falls under your homeowner’s insurance policy.

You can also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the contractor in the past.

  1. Money Upfront

It’s okay for your contractor to ask you for a certain amount of money for supply costs, but be wary of contractors that ask for more than 10% (30% if materials are expensive) and ones that ask you for money often.

Having a scheduled payment/progress plan will keep you from constantly being asked to whip out the checkbook.
